Understand the difference between Wealth creation and savings

You may use the words ‘saving’ and ‘investing’ quite often when talking about money. You might use them thinking they mean the same thing. However, there is a huge difference between them. Savings is essentially whatever amount of money is left with you after you have covered your expenses out of your income. This money is meant to be securely set aside for any use in the future. On the other hand, investment is about creating wealth. It is essentially using your money to create more money.

Either way, the beginning of the process is to have some money. The differing question is what you choose to do with that money. The amount you save can either lie in a savings account or get nominal interest gains or it can be introduced into financial assets that have a chance of growing. It is a disciplined approach to using your money to create a much larger corpus over time than what you would have saved up.

Why do you need to generate wealth?

It is smart to save some money for any emergency that may arise in the future. However, it is smarter to invest money in financial instruments and wait over a period of time to let it turn into a larger sum. Savings can help you to fulfil short-term needs. It is designed to be a cushion in the case of emergencies. Ultimately, you cannot save more than what your income is. It will simply be an unused part of your income waiting to be useful in a needful situation. Moreover, the savings you make regularly is essentially idle money. It just sits in your account and does nothing. The bad thing about idle money is that its value gets lower due to inflation. Essentially, various expenses would soon outgrow the amount you thought you needed to save.

In case of wealth generation through investment, your money compounds and keeps doing that for a long period of time. Moreover, financial instruments also react and adjust to market developments like inflation. Hence, with good performance from an investment instrument, you will always have enough money.

How do mutual funds help with wealth creation?

Wealth creation is the idea of building a large corpus of funds that allows you to fulfill the more luxurious aspirations of your life. Moreover, it is also supposed to be a fund to manage your living expenses once you are done working. While the basic purpose of it is the same with everybody, wealth generation is not a path that goes from point A to point B. You have to create a set of financial goals, identify the minimum amount of wealth you need to generate, choose a suitable investment product, and then constantly monitor how these funds perform.

If you are someone that is comfortable with the idea of major wealth generation over time, mutual funds are the perfect financial instrument for you. Mutual funds offer you investment options that include various asset classes, work on different investor risk profiles, and take varying amounts of time to generate the desired returns. You can also choose to invest in mutual funds that are built specifically to generate wealth for specific financial goals like retirement or higher education for children.
